Sheffield International Documentary Festival And Jerwood Charity Announce £3,500.00 Cash Prize For Student Documentary Makers

The Jerwood Charity and the Sheffield International Documentary Festival are proud to announce the launch of the Jerwood First Cuts Documentary Award. The new award will recognise achievement and excellence in documentary film making amongst students of the UK's film and television schools. It will be presented during the Sheffield International Documentary Festival, 8 - 14 November 2004.

Roanne Dods, Director of Jerwood Charity, “We have always had an interest in supporting talented documentary film makers, and we are delighted to be working with Sheffield International Documentary Festival on this award. Providing support for outstanding young professionals in the early stages of their careers, we hope will give them encouragement to keep going in a competitive and difficult profession.”

“Central to Sheffield's purpose is the support and encouragement of up and coming documentary film makers,” says Sheffield Director Brent Woods. “It is a pleasure to be presenting this award with the Jerwood Charity who's distinguished record of rewarding outstanding talent and high standards complements our own aims.”

Selected by a Jury of five, made up of international film makers and members of the broadcasting community, the winner of the Jerwood First Cuts Award will receive a cash award of £3,500.00 from the foundation.

To apply for the Jerwood First Cuts Documentary Award, individuals or academic institutions are encouraged to view the eligibility requirements and complete the submission form available from www.sidf.co.uk/jerwood . Deadline for applications is 16 July 2004.

The Jerwood Charity is dedicated to imaginative and responsible funding in all areas of human endeavour and excellence, with particular emphasis on the arts. The Charity believes that the arts make an important contribution to British cultural heritage, conferring long-term benefits. The Sheffield International Documentary Festival celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The premier festival in the UK, for factual film and television, it is firmly established as a key event on the media calendar. The festival screens over 70 films from across the globe, from first time and established film makers. It brings together around 700 documentary makers, students and industry professionals to discuss issues pertinent to the world of television and film.
